What players say
The best VN in the trilogy. Julia is a very likeable protagonist, and the writing and soundtrack are both excellent. I'd recommend playing Coteries of New York first for some additional context, but it's not required to enjoy this one.
I think Shadows of New York is a really big improvement on a lot of what Coteries was trying to do - not only by having a more cohesive narrative (while still giving you some choice here and there so on replay it's not all the same) and a significantly stronger, established main character in Julia, but by also providing its own distinct tone separate from Coteries . Coteries of New York is a very bleak, cynical game...
Coteries of New York was bad, but not dismal. This one, though... describing it as a "game" is beyond any accuracy claim. This is a extremely basic visual novel with a bare minimum of interaction which is always of no consequence for the outcome of the story. Still worse, the writing is not only stereotypical and clumsy: it is uninteresting. I bought this on a 90% sale and still feel as being scammed. I could have...
