A tropical paradise seethes with hidden evil in Far Cry®, a cunningly detailed action shooter that pushes the boundaries of combat to shocking new levels. Freelance mariner Jack Carver is cursing the day he ever came to this island.
What drives the score
How to read this
Every input gets a grade, S to D, read from the buyer's side. The score is multiplicative, so an input only counts as raising when it sits near the top of its own scale. Anything with real room left is holding the score back, because that room is the gap to 100. ▲ marks a lift, ▼ a drag or a dock, ? an input we do not have, • a fact this genre's score does not use. The exact weights stay secret.
The value story
It has never been cheaper than $2.49. That was March 2013. 104 discounts in the 14 years on record. They run about 70 percent off, roughly 5 weeks apart. Today's $2.99 at 70 percent off still sits 20 percent above the floor, so a deeper cut exists in its history.
On value it sits in the top 20 percent of its genre. It is better reviewed than 64 percent of its genre. Among the games that feel like it, Metro: Last Light Redux ($19.99, scores 71) beats it on value, while it beats Crysis ($29.99, scores 37).
Players rate it 82 percent positive over its lifetime, but the last 30 days run 74 percent. Something recent has soured the room. 8 of the 800 Steam-purchase reviews sampled here come from buyers who refunded the game, sampled from reviews written October 2024 to August 2026. Inside the two-hour refund window, 67 percent of the 1,884 reviews written there were positive, against 82 percent overall, and those are 17 percent of everything written about it.

What players say
The game is beyond broken on Steam, the AI is stupidly broken as they can see and shoot you from miles away, sometimes even prefiring. Even with all the fixes the game was insanely hard even on the easiest difficulty, having 20 enemies all over the map with perfect aim, some with rocket launchers spamming and even helicopters not to mention the mutants that can easily one shot the player. The game was really fun up...
This game is a freakin' mess. It handles incredibly well for an old game. The controls and the shooting actually feel good, even by today's standards, but the stealth mechanics and enemy AI are legitimately broken. As an unintended consequence of patch 1.4 (that the Steam version starts on), the enemy soldiers have literal wallhacks whenever you are inside a canvas building (like a tent). Luckily, I was able to find...
Nostalgia from back in the days. It's the first Far Cry ever made. The original. Back in the days, when games were still made with love and passion. And for a game of 2004, it looks utterly good. If you still want to cherry-pick and complain about anything though, OK: the AI is unfortunately pretty bad. It must be mentioned still, that for 2004 dimensions, the attempt is OK - the AI tries to react, enemy soldiers...

Far Cry® scores 63/100 on the BANG Score (fair value). The BANG Score rates what a game is worth for the money. Via Steam BANGERS. https://steambangers.com/game/13520/far-cryThe BANG Score is one number for value, 0 to 100: price against how it reviews and how long it was built to be. It answers the money question and stops there; whether the game is for you is still your call.
Reviews set the ceiling and price moves you inside it, so a cheap game that reviews badly cannot climb. Ratings from few reviewers are shrunk toward the middle, so 100 percent from nine people does not outrank 96 percent from ninety thousand. Length comes from HowLongToBeat where it can be matched, measured against a per-genre floor so a five-hour narrative game is judged against other narrative games rather than against a sixty-hour RPG. Where no verified length exists the score says so and carries a dock, because the biggest input is then a guess. The full method, including where it is weak → Steam reviews as of Aug 3, price as of Sep 24.
