I saw a lot of negative reviews at launch, can't remember why exactly. Decided to pick it up later because the visuals really caught my eye. Bought it on sale, expected a decent Metroidvania, and instead it sucked me in harder than Hollow Knight did back in the day. The game is gorgeous. Like, "stop and stare at the background" gorgeous. Hand-painted 2.5D vibes that make every area feel alive, and even the character...
Combining my 2 favorite genres, souls and metroidvania, they made something pretty good here. Although it's not as good as the best of both genres, it brings something new to the mix. I paid half price and it was well worth the money.
Quite possibly the worst MV I've played in a long time. Cumbersome controls, awkward combat which is pretty much the entire game, platforming is garbage, level design is bland, there's too much story, the art design is insanely generic, etc. Quite possibly the most egregious sin this game has it makes you use lockpicks on every single chest, so you might go through a gauntlet of the insanely annoying enemies that...
