The story and characters are what make this game so special. The world is brutal, and you really feel how difficult it is to survive in it. I felt genuinely connected to the characters, especially Joel and Ellie. You can feel Joel's pain over losing Sarah, and watching Ellie lose the people she cares about, one by one, is heartbreaking. Thirteen years ago, as a broke teenager craving the industry's newest post-apocalyptic obsession, I settled for YouTube Let's Plays to fill the void. Over the years, that coping mechanism crystallised into a devout annual tradition: treating the game not as an interactive playground, but as an eleven-hour film. For thirteen long years...
The game doesn't let you pick up sabres which are on display in the museum. Go on, git gud with planks and improvised shivs instead... Coming from a heated fight where I engaged 4 shroom-men for the first time, I must say, "Sony, you sadistic bastards." Not recommended, unless you want to see one of the most well-written stories in the history of gaming unfold. Edit: Jokes aside, I could really do without a game...
