What drives the score
How to read this
Every input gets a grade, S to D, read from the buyer's side. The score is multiplicative, so an input only counts as raising when it sits near the top of its own scale. Anything with real room left is holding the score back, because that room is the gap to 100. ▲ marks a lift, ▼ a drag or a dock, ? an input we do not have, • a fact this genre's score does not use. The exact weights stay secret.
The value story
September 2024 is where it bottomed out, at $1.49. Its cuts run 75 percent off as a rule. There have been 89 in the 14 years tracked, about 6 weeks apart. Today it is at full price. The last sale was about 3 weeks ago, and on this game's rhythm the next one tends to arrive within 6 weeks.
It is pricier than 70 percent of its genre, and less well reviewed than 95 percent. Among the games that feel like it, Planet Coaster 2 ($49.99, scores 31) beats it on value, while it beats Cities XXL ($9.99, scores 2).
Of the 223 Steam-purchase reviews this site sampled, 1 comes from a buyer who refunded the game, sampled from reviews written March 2020 to July 2026. Inside the two-hour refund window, 41 percent of the 180 reviews written there were positive, against 59 percent overall, and those are 17 percent of everything written about it.

What players say
Thanks for the 85% discount, the game really playable on my laptop. 60fps at low setting. I will play the game for the rest of the week❤❤stay focus edit: I really love the game❤❤
I've had this game for years. I had the CD game long before I gave in and bought it on Steam. As city builders go, I've always liked being able to create multiple cities around the world and then have them essentially trade with each other. But in all the years I've played it, I've never succeeded without cheating. Take that as you want. The game is visually pretty, has a decent series of tutorials, and doesn't tax...
this game is honestly amazing. for me it's everything i could want in a city builder because i prefer just being able to build whatever i want and grow my city as opposed to have to like spend hours grinding to be able to grow. it also runs pretty nice on my pc (which isn't the greatest) but it does lag a bit since i have a TON of buildings. 10/10 game, worth it for 2 bucks ngl

Cities XL Platinum scores 6/100 on the BANG Score (a skip). The BANG Score rates what a game is worth for the money. Via Steam BANGERS. https://steambangers.com/game/231140/cities-xl-platinumThe BANG Score is one number for value, 0 to 100: price against how it reviews and how long it was built to be. It answers the money question and stops there; whether the game is for you is still your call.
Reviews set the ceiling and price moves you inside it, so a cheap game that reviews badly cannot climb. Ratings from few reviewers are shrunk toward the middle, so 100 percent from nine people does not outrank 96 percent from ninety thousand. Length comes from HowLongToBeat where it can be matched, measured against a per-genre floor so a five-hour narrative game is judged against other narrative games rather than against a sixty-hour RPG. Where no verified length exists the score says so and carries a dock, because the biggest input is then a guess. The full method, including where it is weak → Steam reviews as of Sep 6, price as of Sep 24.
