What drives the score

How to read this

Every input gets a grade, S to D, read from the buyer's side. The score is multiplicative, so an input only counts as raising when it sits near the top of its own scale. Anything with real room left is holding the score back, because that room is the gap to 100. ▲ marks a lift, ▼ a drag or a dock, ? an input we do not have, • a fact this genre's score does not use. The exact weights stay secret.

The value story

October 2021 is where it bottomed out, at $4.74. Its cuts run 66 percent off as a rule. There have been 82 in the 12 years tracked, about 5 weeks apart. Today it is at full price. The last sale was about 6 weeks ago, and on this game's rhythm the next one tends to arrive within 5 weeks.

Against its own genre it lands in the top 31 percent on value. It is pricier than 78 percent of its genre, and better reviewed than 64 percent. Among the games that feel like it, Darkwood ($19.99, scores 87) beats it on value, while it beats They Breathe ($1.99, scores 57).

Of the 668 Steam-purchase reviews this site sampled, 7 come from buyers who refunded the game, sampled from reviews written March 2020 to September 2026. Inside the two-hour refund window, 59 percent of the 812 reviews written there were positive, against 83 percent overall, and those are 11 percent of everything written about it.

HowLongToBeat players log 21.8 hours as a typical playtime, and completionists log 123, 5.6 times as much.

What players say

The world and characters you meet are amazingly weird and wonderful. The phase of playing this game when you first explore the different ports is an amazing experience. Fair warning though: The pacing of this game is slow and once you experienced most of the distributed stories and try to acchieve a certain quest it can become somewhat grindy.

the best lovecraftian game ever, every location and character is very well written, atmosphere and lore is way better than any other same type of game by miles, I agree that the gameplay have some flaws but it doesn't change how this game is a masterpiece

Sunless Sea has an incredibly cool concept, but actually playing it is a massive chore. The biggest issue is the pacing. The ship moves at a snail's pace, making exploration feel completely boring. You spend minutes staring at a tiny boat crawling across a pitch-black screen, praying for something interesting to happen, only to run into a wall of unfair difficulty. The game revolves entirely around you dying over...

The BANG Score is one number for value, 0 to 100: price against how it reviews and how long it was built to be. It answers the money question and stops there; whether the game is for you is still your call.

Reviews set the ceiling and price moves you inside it, so a cheap game that reviews badly cannot climb. Ratings from few reviewers are shrunk toward the middle, so 100 percent from nine people does not outrank 96 percent from ninety thousand. Length comes from HowLongToBeat where it can be matched, measured against a per-genre floor so a five-hour narrative game is judged against other narrative games rather than against a sixty-hour RPG. Where no verified length exists the score says so and carries a dock, because the biggest input is then a guess. The full method, including where it is weak → Steam reviews as of Sep 13, price as of Sep 24.
