There's a lot of mention of XCOM but in my opinion the better and more direct comparison is to Games Workshop's famous Blood Bowl boardgame. There are a good deal of similarities and some meaningful differences, but fundamentally both games are alike in the sense that they are turn based sportsball games where you manage the development of your team over the course of a season, trying to finish as well as possible...
