The value story
The lowest price on record is $7.19, set in June 2026. Its cuts run 30 percent off as a rule. There have been 20 in the 5 years tracked, about 8 weeks apart.
Value puts it in the top 8 percent of the games it competes with. It is pricier than 65 percent of its genre, and better reviewed than 81 percent. The games it most resembles do better on the same math. FINAL FANTASY VI ($10.79, scores 87) and FINAL FANTASY III ($10.79, scores 87) both outscore it.
This site sampled 800 of its Steam-purchase reviews; 2 were written by buyers who refunded it, sampled from reviews written August 2021 to August 2026. Inside the two-hour refund window, 66 percent of the 116 reviews written there were positive, against 82 percent overall, and those are 4 percent of everything written about it.
Valve rates it Steam Deck Verified, so it runs on the handheld without fiddling.

The keyword system is still there, but they now highlight the keywords you can use when talking to an npc. And the high encounter rate...
I....uh...don't want to leave a negative review. It has great pixel art redone, and a fantastic soundtrack. And the boost system makes the game 100x more playable...abit. But maaan it is a hot mess still. If you play it with boosts on it becomes a slightly better game tho. I mean i am not forgetting this game did bring new staples to the ballpark. It walked so the many after can run. I won't deny this.
Unless you're trying to play through every Final Fantasy game, or even just every Pixel Remaster, Final Fantasy 2 has nothing to recommend it. The 'gain what you use' progression system is fundamentally flawed, making training your characters difficult to figure out and overly long to execute even when you do know what to do, even with the bonus HP from the Advance and PSP versions. In particular, spells outside...
