The value story
The lowest price on record is $2.49, set in August 2025. 43 discounts in the 4 years on record. They run about 75 percent off, roughly 5 weeks apart. Today's $2.49 at 90 percent off matches the lowest price in the record.
At full price it scores 15. The current cut is what makes it a 23.
It is pricier than 81 percent of its genre, and less well reviewed than 76 percent. Among the games that feel like it, Contagion ($9.99, scores 35) beats it on value, while it beats Counter-Strike Nexon (free, scores 17).
Steam's global achievement data puts about 19 percent of players at this game's ending achievement. On a 0.8-hour game, the hours short of it still count in its price per hour. Of the 800 Steam-purchase reviews this site sampled, 33 come from buyers who refunded the game, sampled from reviews written July 2023 to August 2026. That is more refunded reviewers than 9 in 10 paid games this site has sampled to the same depth, and among the 1,071 games in its genre sampled this deeply, 52 have a larger share. The typical game sits near 5 in 1,000, so the score docks it. 1 of the 33 refunded reviewers was past Valve's two-hour window when they wrote the review. Inside the two-hour refund window, 61 percent of the 1,847 reviews written there were positive, against 68 percent overall, and those are 69 percent of everything written about it.

Valve rates it Steam Deck Verified, and at 0.8 hours it is short enough to finish on one.

What players say
Welp its a fantastic game when ya throw fairly beefy hardware at it... and with a few adjustments #1 - dial in the eq/ sfx -turn voice to 35% (this fixes the absurd unbalanced stock setting) -music about 75% -and shot sfx to 100% max (with these adjustments it actually sounds like being at arcade) #2 -for a cool original take on "they are not zombies they are mutants" hotd vibe.... I turn on random blood color...
The House of the Dead Remake is everything you'd expect from a revamp of an old-school 90s zombie rail shooter. It's fun, all too brief, but still provides enough entertainment solo or with a friend. However, it still feels like a missed opportunity to stuff it full of some worthwhile new content. I would say its worth a buy especially if its on sale.
I'm not going to say "don't play this game" or "don't buy it" because there is some fun to be had. But anyone thinking this is in any way an improvement over the original is kidding themselves. The graphics are kinda ugly. I'd rather the 90s arcade look to the awkwardly lit and animated models here. Only the Saturn and OG PC ports look worse in my opinion. The gameplay, while kind of there, lacks all the polish and...
