It took me ten years of starting and stopping before this game clicked for me. And now that I've actually played it, I'm glad it did. I got back into CRPGs with BGIII, and I wanted to go back to where it all began. And the transition was *hard*. I was not used to pause-and-play CRPGs, or the rules of AD&D. But this game is actually a really great entrypoint into the world of CRPGs as well as old-school roleplaying...
Thirty hours into Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, playing on my couch with my MacBook and an old-school strategy guide, and I've learned three things: every "quick errand" becomes a six-map expedition, half the Sword Coast is either cursed or a spider, and Imoen is apparently happiest as a wolf thief because I gave her a cursed-looking cloak and she immediately embraced the lifestyle. Baldur's Gate is a fun game with a decent story. You can also clearly see how some staples of modern-day RPGs have their roots in this game. The story was well written, Minus a few pacing issues and a slow start. Once you get to chapter 3, things really start to pick up, and that's when I really became hooked.
