What drives the score
How to read this
Every input gets a grade, S to D, read from the buyer's side. The score is multiplicative, so an input only counts as raising when it sits near the top of its own scale. Anything with real room left is holding the score back, because that room is the gap to 100. ▲ marks a lift, ▼ a drag or a dock, ? an input we do not have, • a fact this genre's score does not use. The exact weights stay secret.
The value story
November 2017 is where it bottomed out, at $0.97. Its cuts run 86 percent off as a rule. There have been 84 in the 13 years tracked, about 6 weeks apart. Today it is at full price. The last sale was about 6 weeks ago, and on this game's rhythm the next one tends to arrive within 6 weeks.
Value puts it in the top 33 percent of the games it competes with. Among the games that feel like it, Space Rangers HD: A War Apart ($14.99, scores 92) beats it on value, while it beats Deus Ex: Invisible War ($6.99, scores 5).
None of the 274 Steam-purchase reviews sampled here come from buyers who refunded the game, sampled from reviews written March 2020 to August 2026. Inside the two-hour refund window, 56 percent of the 141 reviews written there were positive, against 74 percent overall, and those are 31 percent of everything written about it.

What players say
This is such a fun little RPG with amazing turn-based tactics mechanics and storyline. I've played this through once before, and I love playing through it again years later, too.. The comedy, the story, the dynamics of everything going on here, it's hard to describe, but great to play. Fantasy mixed with science fiction, all in one.
Pretends it's an RPG but it's closer to a lucasarts point and click adventure. You are going to need a walkthrough and a lot of free time. I suggest you lay on easy because there's no extra fun to be had from making fights take any longer than they already do. This game had a fast-forward button patched into it for a reason. (Config file says it's \ but it maps to # on my machine). I also suggest you make multiple...
I am not a JRPG fan. The only similar game I had played before this was the old "Septerra Core", so I may be wrong and unfairly lumping the whole genre together. In my limited view, these are party RPGs with linear stories and questionable combat systems that look turn-based without actually being turn-based. "Anachronox" turned out to be roughly that. The protagonist gathers a fixed party as the story progresses...

Anachronox scores 40/100 on the BANG Score (a skip). The BANG Score rates what a game is worth for the money. Via Steam BANGERS. https://steambangers.com/game/242940/anachronoxThe BANG Score is one number for value, 0 to 100: price against how it reviews and how long it was built to be. It answers the money question and stops there; whether the game is for you is still your call.
Reviews set the ceiling and price moves you inside it, so a cheap game that reviews badly cannot climb. Ratings from few reviewers are shrunk toward the middle, so 100 percent from nine people does not outrank 96 percent from ninety thousand. Length comes from HowLongToBeat where it can be matched, measured against a per-genre floor so a five-hour narrative game is judged against other narrative games rather than against a sixty-hour RPG. Where no verified length exists the score says so and carries a dock, because the biggest input is then a guess. The full method, including where it is weak → Steam reviews as of Sep 20, price as of Sep 24.
