What players say
Play Eschatos. Finally got my normal all clear, the game owns. Really nice pacing, the shield mechanic is elegantly designed, the difficulty on normal is a good challenge for shmup newbies like myself, and the soundtrack is absolutely unskippable. Can't recommend this enough. Play Eschatos.

This game rules. It came to my attention when the developers of ZeroRanger cited it as an influence in an interview. It's a non-bullet-hell shmup (fast bullets, launched in learnable patterns) where you have three weapons that you can use at any time, one of which is a shield with a regenerating meter. The graphics are "serviceable," but they get a lot done with a little -- notably, I really appreciate the strong...
A beautiful classic shmup close in caliber to Mushi and Crimzon. The space invader part is iconic. It comes with 2 modes (original and advanced) and various difficulty levels (gets really hairy at high difficulty). Also a solid port (quick restart, leader board, replay, stage select, ...). The only important feature missing is boss (and mid-boss) select in order to practice them. Nevertheless, a must have and play.
