The value story

20 discounts in the 3 years on record, a median of 70 percent off across all of them, roughly 6 weeks apart. Today it is at full price, and its last discount ended 11 days ago.

It is pricier than 86 percent of its genre, and less well reviewed than 94 percent. On the same math The Dungeon Of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet Of Chaos ($5.24, scores 76) and King's Bounty II ($39.99, scores 9) are the better buys, and they are the games it most resembles.

More about Crown Wars: The Black Prince

Steam's global achievement data puts about 1 percent of players at this game's ending achievement. On a 16.3-hour game, the hours short of it still count in its price per hour. 12 of the 472 Steam-purchase reviews sampled here come from buyers who refunded the game, sampled from reviews written May 2024 to August 2026. That is more refunded reviewers than 9 in 10 paid games this site has sampled to the same depth, and among the 2,866 games in its genre sampled this deeply, 149 have a larger share. The typical game sits near 5 in 1,000, so the score docks it. 5 of the 12 refunded reviewers were past Valve's two-hour window when they wrote the review.

What players say

This game is weird. Too many missions are similar to each other, but I still kept playing. Almost every aspect of the game could be deeper, but I still kept playing. What is wrong with me?

I am by no means complete the game but the experience with it so far has been much better than the reviews led me to believe. As other reviews have stated, this is essentially medieval XCOM. Is the game as polished as XCOM, no, but that does not impact the enjoyment of the game and it is much cheaper to boot. Could the game have offered more, absolutely (it would have been great to see chests or items dropped by...

XCOM meets medieval France sounds like an absolute dream on paper, but gameplay-wise it's just aggressively okay. Positioning your squads, managing class abilities, and executing tactical combat have their moments, but repetitive mission objectives and stiff animations make the combat loop get old pretty fast. Wait for a heavy discount if you need a turn-based strategy fix.
