Best Free Games
Free games scoring 78 or better, and the four things free can mean on Steam.
Free on Steam means four different things and the flag cannot tell them apart. A finished free game, episode one of a paid series, a demo wearing a full store page, and a live-service game that will ask for money in twenty minutes all set the same flag. Life is Strange - Episode 1 is on this list at 94.2. It is episode one. The other four cost money.
More about this list
The arithmetic is the other problem. Free is a price of zero and you cannot divide by it, so a free game's score leans on review quality and on how many people own it, and a small player base brings the ceiling down. The best-scoring free game here right now is Our Life: Beginnings & Always at 95.3. The gate is 78. At 85 the list would be 87 games, too thin to browse. At 78 it is 391, and 147 of those have no owner count at all, so the score assumes a small player base for them.
Doki Doki Literature Club is a 94.7 with 229,725 reviews and 4.2 hours, and I am not going to say anything else about it. The Expendabros is a 94.9, an actual Broforce spinoff that Devolver gave away in 2014 as a movie tie-in and then just left up.
